Data we collect
1. Information you provide via the quiz
Age, trip length, coverage preferences, declared health conditions, relationship to the visitor, and similar quiz answers. This information is processed to produce recommendations.
2. Information you provide voluntarily
Email address (only if you choose to receive results by email or contact us).
3. Automatic technical information
Standard server log data - IP address, user agent, referring URL, and timestamps - captured for security, fraud prevention, and basic analytics. We may use a privacy-respecting analytics tool to understand which pages are useful; this tool does not track you across other websites.
4. Cookies
We use a small number of strictly necessary cookies to keep the site functional (e.g. remembering quiz progress). We do not use advertising cookies. If we add an analytics cookie in the future, we will request consent first where required.
Why we use your data (legal bases)
- To provide the service (legitimate interest / performance of contract): processing quiz answers to produce recommendations.
- To respond to you (legitimate interest): replying to emails you send.
- To keep the site secure (legitimate interest): basic abuse and fraud prevention.
- With your consent: emailing your results, or any future use that requires consent under GDPR or India's DPDP Act.
Sharing
We share data only with the service providers needed to run the site (hosting, transactional email, error monitoring). These providers process data on our behalf and are bound by confidentiality and data-processing terms. We do not sell, rent, or otherwise transfer your personal data to advertisers or data brokers.
If you choose to be connected to an insurer or broker, we share only the information you explicitly authorise at that step, and only after we tell you what will be shared.
Retention
- Quiz submissions without an email: deleted or anonymised within 90 days.
- Quiz submissions with an email (you asked for results): retained while your inbox subscription is active, then deleted within 30 days of unsubscribe.
- Server logs: retained up to 30 days.
- Email correspondence: retained while reasonably useful, typically up to 24 months.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (e.g. EEA / UK under GDPR, California under CCPA, India under DPDP), you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or port your personal data, and to object to certain processing. To exercise any of these, write to privacy@backtoindia.com. We will verify your request and respond within 30 days.
Children
BackToIndia is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has submitted information, contact us and we will delete it.
International transfers
Our infrastructure is global. Where personal data is transferred outside your country of residence, we rely on standard contractual clauses or equivalent safeguards.
Changes
Material changes to this policy will be posted here with an updated date. We will not retroactively reduce the protections afforded to data you have already given us.
